Michael Harris
Studio Director and Bikram Certified Instructor
Michael is a teacher who will truly inspire you to go beyond your limitations and boundaries. In his classes, you will laugh, sweat and be refreshed. Michael will teach you to let go of the stresses of the mind and how to open more fully in the body. If you are challenged due to physical or health issues, Michael will show you just what to do. Whether you are a brand new student or an experienced practitioner you will feel motivated and challenged every time you enter class.
In 1986, at the age of 27, Michael was diagnosed with peripheral vascular disease. Leading vascular surgeons performed bypass surgery on both legs. It was predicated Michael would lose one or both legs through amputation. After phlebitis thrombosis occurred and additional blockages appeared, more surgery was recommended. Michael refused the surgery and left the hospital on a cane. Michael shortly thereafter began practicing yoga. Initially studying several traditions of yoga, he literally stumbled into Bikram Yoga for the first time in 1995. Then in 1998, with ongoing pain, Bikram Choudhury showed Michael how to heal himself through yoga. Bikram then certified Michael to teach Bikram Yoga. Michael’s first school was in Portland, Oregon and he now resides in Bend, Oregon teaching at his second school.
Michael continues to train regularly with his teachers, Bikram and Rajashree Choudhury and Emmy Cleaves in both the beginning and advanced series of Bikram Yoga. Michael is a Senior Faculty Member at Bikram’s International Headquarters, conducting posture clinics and teaching the new “teachers in training.” Michael has also been certified to judge local, national and international Hatha Yoga Championships. In his spare time Michael is an avid hiker and loves skiing the deep fresh powder!!
